Research Analyst (2 positions)

Job summary

The Research Analyst will analyse and interpret healthcare data to enable healthcare organisations to make better decisions that improve the quality and efficiency of care for patients.

They will work as part of the growing Analytics team, scoping internal and external research questions as they arise, designing and executing statistical analyses, exploring and evaluating new datasets, and developing new metrics and algorithms.

Key duties and main responsibilities

  • Analyse large patient-level datasets to inform healthcare organisations on the quality and efficiency of their services
  • Research and develop statistical models for a range of adverse clinical outcomes such as mortality
  • Contribute to the development of innovative analytical methodologies including predictive risk modelling
  • Collaborate with NHS professionals, including clinicians, to conduct analytical work on both regional and national initiatives
  • Develop high quality outputs for customers, including reports, dashboards, algorithms and presentations
  • Provide expert analytical advice to healthcare organisations and internal teams
  • Develop expert knowledge of the core datasets and analytical methods used routinely within the business
  • Assess if new datasets or propositions have the potential to deliver actionable insight for customers
  • Develop strong domain knowledge in healthcare
  • Develop analytical skills and proficiency in programming languages such as SQL and R
  • Uphold the exacting standards of the Analytics team by contributing to the quality assurance of outputs

  • Internal: Data Engineering, Data Operations, Application Development, Account Management, Project/Product Management, Business Development, Imperial College Research Unit
  • External: NHS organisations (e.g. National bodies, Providers, Commissioners, Healthcare systems), Commercial partners, Research collaborators

Experience, Skills and Qualifications

Essential:

  • Degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g. mathematics, statistics, epidemiology, economics) or a scientific discipline with demonstration of excellent analytical skills
  • Strong interest in healthcare
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Evidence of independent research
  • Experience working in a collaborative environment
  • Research or working experience in data analysis
  • Ability to rapidly learn new software and technologies
  • Strong time management skills
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Desirable:

  • Postgraduate degree (Masters or higher)
  • Clinical background
  • Experience working with healthcare datasets (e.g. HES, SUS, Primary Care data)
  • Understanding of the workings and structure of the NHS in England or an international healthcare system
  • Training in epidemiology or medical statistics
  • Understanding of advanced statistical techniques (e.g. regression modelling, machine learning)
  • Experience in using Microsoft SQL server
  • Advanced Excel skills (e.g. VBA)
  • Experience using data visualisation software (e.g. Power BI, Tableau, SSRS)
  • Experience using statistical software (e.g. R, SAS, SPSS)
  • Experience working in a commercial environment
