Global Comparators

The first truly global hospital benchmarking collaborative bringing together data from leading hospitals in different countries to compare the results and share knowledge and understanding.

Bringing together over 50 members in ten different countries: the UK, US, Australia, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Finland, Norway and Denmark.

Global Comparators is a major international hospital network, which Dr Foster created in 2011 to be the first truly global hospital benchmarking collaborative. It brings together data from hospitals in different countries, translated into a common language, enabling comparison of the results within the network. It engages leaders from some of the best hospitals around the world to learn from the information and share their knowledge and understanding. The overall aim is to help those leaders turn that learning into ways of improving healthcare locally and globally.

Share best practice

Look beyond national boundaries through the sharing of data, collaborative working to understand variation in outcomes, research and exchanging best practice.

More benefits

Global Outcomes Accelerated Learning (GOAL)

Divided into disease areas the GOAL programmes provide a practical framework for knowledge sharing, behavioural change, research resulting in peer-reviewed manuscripts and improvement in clinical practice.

More features
“There is no global benchmarking dataset like it. For depth, breadth and quality, it’s truly unrivalled.”

Prof. C.J. (Cor) Kalkman, MD, PhD, Professor of Anaesthesiology / Research Chair, UMC Utrecht, The Netherlands

  • Improve quality and patient outcomes

Improve quality of care and patient outcomes through benchmarking international data

  • Share data and best practice

Look beyond national boundaries through the sharing of data, collaborative working to understand variation in outcomes, research and exchanging best practice.

  • Develop international standards

Develop international standards of clinical practice through comparison of global variation

  • Participate in global research

Motivate staff by encouraging them to participate in global research with leading hospitals

“Global Comparators is a unique international network of hospitals allowing for pioneering work that has demonstrated that linking international administrative datasets enables comparison of outcome in colorectal surgery.”

Omar Faiz, BSc (Hons), MBBS, FRCS (GenSurg), MS, Consultant Surgeon at St Mark’s Hospital and Honorary Senior, Lecturer at Imperial College London, UK

  • Data comparison through the toolkit and research server

Using the first ever standardised international dataset, compare outcomes for mortality, readmissions and length of stay, complications and other variables across 259 clinical diagnoses and 38 clinical procedure groups, with the ability to drill down to patient level.

  • Global Outcomes Accelerated Learning (GOAL)

Divided into disease areas the GOAL programmes provide a practical framework for knowledge sharing, behavioural change, research resulting in peer-reviewed manuscripts and improvement in clinical practice. They are clinician-led, with Dr Foster providing health informatics expertise, project management and oversight.

  • Quality Improvement Programme

The Quality Improvement Programme focuses on clinical practice and leadership management. Following feedback from programme members we are currently looking into best practice and variation in outcome of SEPSIS. The network will report its findings and solutions in a manuscript to share their acquired knowledge and expertise more widely.
